Important Notice: Vehicle Theft in the Pokeno Lakeside

Earlier today, a post was shared regarding vehicle theft in the Pokeno Lakeside area, an issue that has been ongoing for some time.

We strongly encourage anyone who has experienced a vehicle or home break-in or noticed any suspicious activity to report it promptly. Every report matters. The more incidents are logged, the better equipped the New Zealand Police and our local Community Patrol are to respond and increase their presence in affected areas.

Quick Vehicle Theft Prevention Tips

One of the most effective ways to deter vehicle theft is to increase the time and effort required to steal your car. The longer it takes, the more likely it is that a thief will give up or be caught.

Here are practical steps you can take:

  • Always lock your vehicle—even for short stops.

  • Ensure all windows and sunroofs are fully closed when the vehicle is unattended.

  • Keep valuables out of sight—preferably in the boot, or better yet, take them with you.

  • Park in well-lit, high-visibility areas when away from home.

  • At home, park inside a locked garage, behind a secure gate, or under a streetlight if outdoors.

  • Never leave your vehicle running or keys inside, even briefly.

Additional Security Devices to Consider:

  • Steering wheel lock

  • Wheel lock

  • Vehicle tracking system

  • Car alarm system

  • Ignition cut-off switch or ignition shield

  • Fuel cut-off switch

  • Handbrake lock

  • Transmission lock

Many newer vehicles already include some of these features, but they can also be retrofitted to older models for added protection.

Final Reminder

Taking simple yet effective precautions significantly reduces the risk of vehicle theft—and helps protect not just your property, but the wider community.

Let’s stay alert, look out for one another, and continue working together to keep Pokeno safe.
